Suffolk County Police
Canine Section
The Suffolk County Police Department Canine Section consists of 22 canines. All 22 canines complete a New York State certified patrol course which includes obedience, evidence recovery, tracking and criminal apprehension.
Each dog then receives specialty training in one of three areas: Narcotics Detection, Explosives Detection and Human Remains Detection. Most recently, the Canine Section added its first Electronic Storage Device Detection (ESDD) canine. ESDD canines are trained to locate hidden electronic storage devices such as thumb drives, hard drives, computers, cell phones and tablets, to name a few.
Additionally, the Canine Section has a single purpose Explosive Detection canine deployed at Long Island MacArthur Airport.
The Suffolk County Police Department Canine Section is instrumental in training the canines from Riverhead Police Department, Southampton Village Police Department and the Town of Southold Police Department.
